RYAN D. FREI

PARTNER, MCGUIREWOODS

Ryan is a commercial litigation partner for McGuireWoods LLP, based in Richmond, Virginia. He joined McGuireWoods in 2006 after a one-year clerkship with then-Chief Judge James R. Spencer of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Ryan maintains a robust pro bono practice through both substantive work and leadership roles, including substantial efforts benefiting the Spanish-speaking population in the Richmond area. He has led three multi-year immigration matters involving a combination of claims for asylum and other relief in DHS-contested proceedings, including for a Colombian family that was targeted by both the FARC and paramilitary groups.

In 2016, Ryan received the McGuireWoods Pro Bono Award for his work on behalf of a Nepalese mother and her children, successfully obtaining an administrative “duress exemption” to the “material support bar” under the Patriot Act after the mother was robbed of the money in her pocket by Maoist rebels—then a recognized terrorist group—while performing humanitarian work.

Ryan helped launch his firm’s pro bono partnership with Ayuda several years ago and currently serves as Co-chair of the Pro Bono Committee in his firm’s Richmond office.
